We’re excited to announce that the second round of our KDS Cooking Program kicked off today, and our chefs wasted no time getting into the groove! ️ This week, they whipped up a delicious batch of roast chicken and vegetable pies, each one made with love and a whole lot of fun. The meal was topped off with a mouthwatering lemon and berry pudding served with vanilla ice cream—safe to say, the smiles were as big as the servings!
The day began with a group morning tea, followed by a valuable discussion about meal planning. Our participants learned how to write a shopping list based on the recipes provided, budget for the ingredients, and make healthy, cost-effective choices. Afterward, we headed to Drakes Newton Foodland to hand-pick fresh ingredients. Each participant had a chance to work through the shopping list and even try out the self-checkout services. Then it was back to the kitchen to create the amazing lunch that everyone enjoyed! This program isn’t just about cooking—it’s about developing essential life skills, from budgeting to teamwork, all while making new friends along the way.

Why Cooking is So Beneficial for Everyone—Especially Those Living with Disabilities
Cooking is much more than just a necessary daily task; it’s a gateway to independence and personal growth, particularly for individuals living with disabilities. Our KDS Cooking Program is designed to help participants develop a range of skills that go beyond the kitchen. From meal planning to budgeting, from teamwork to problem-solving, participants learn valuable lessons that apply to many aspects of daily life. Here are just some of the key benefits of our program:- Learning to Cook: Participants gain hands-on experience in preparing a variety of meals, fostering creativity, and building confidence in the kitchen.
- Meal Planning and Budgeting: By learning how to plan meals and budget for groceries, participants enhance their financial literacy and make healthier, cost-effective choices.
- Grocery Shopping and Social Norms: Participants practice writing shopping lists, navigating stores, and learning social norms associated with grocery shopping, such as using self-checkout stations and being mindful of others’ food preferences.
- Using Technology: Our participants get to engage with new technologies, such as self-checkout systems at grocery stores or kitchen appliances, which boosts their technological confidence and skills.
- Financial Planning: Learning how to make cost-effective meal choices teaches financial planning, an essential aspect of independent living.
- Social Interaction and Teamwork: Cooking in a group fosters teamwork and communication skills. Participants collaborate to prepare meals, offering them the opportunity to make friends and develop social confidence.
- Awareness of Others: Participants learn to be mindful of dietary preferences and restrictions, cultivating an understanding of how to accommodate others, which builds empathy and consideration.
- Problem Solving: Whether it’s adjusting a recipe or finding alternative ingredients, participants are challenged to solve problems in real time, enhancing their cognitive and decision-making abilities.
