February Cooking Class: Building New Skills

This week’s cooking class was an exciting one in the Kangaroo Kitchen—we dived into the art of making dumplings! ✨ Learning this skill was both fun and rewarding as we experimented with traditional hand-filled methods and tested out a dumpling machine press. The results? Delicious vegetarian dumplings and chicken & chive dumplings, served alongside vegetable-packed fried rice and crispy spring rolls. With plenty of chopping, grating, and slicing involved, it was a great way to practise our knife skills and teamwork! 🥟

Of course, no class is complete without a little baking! This week, we whipped up a batch of double chocolate & hazelnut biscuits—the perfect sweet treat to end a busy day in the kitchen. 🍪

We missed Josh and Joseph this week, but we made sure to take plenty of photos and saved them a copy of the recipes so they won’t miss out on the fun when they return!

More Than Cooking: The Power of Friendship, Respect & Inclusion

Our cooking classes are about more than just food—they’re a space where friendship, respect, and inclusion thrive. Cooking together creates a sense of teamwork and belonging, where everyone plays a role, shares ideas, and supports one another. Whether it’s helping someone knead dough, suggesting a new ingredient, or simply sharing a laugh, each class strengthens the bonds between participants.

Respect is a key ingredient in our kitchen. Everyone works at their own pace, and we encourage a positive, judgment-free space where all skill levels are celebrated. No matter your ability, there’s always something you can contribute—and something new to learn! 📖

Inclusion is at the heart of what we do. Our classes welcome everyone, fostering a supportive and encouraging environment where individuals can express themselves, build confidence, and create connections. Food has a special way of bringing people together, and our program ensures that everyone feels valued and involved.

Building Confidence in the Kitchen 🔪 ‍

Each week, we focus on growing our skills and becoming more independent in the kitchen. Learning how to use different utensils and tools—like the dumpling press this week!—helps us feel more comfortable trying new things. From measuring ingredients to cooking at the right temperatures, each class builds confidence step by step.

Participants not only learn practical skills like chopping, mixing, and frying, but also gain problem-solving abilities—figuring out what to do if a sauce is too thick, or how to adjust a recipe when ingredients are missing. These small challenges help build resilience and independence, skills that can be applied beyond the kitchen.
