As we wrap up the third week of our celebrated cooking classes at Kangaroo Disability Services, the kitchen has been a hub of activity, learning, and delicious aromas. This week, our participants tackled the comfort classics—Shepherd’s Pie and Bread and Butter Pudding—dishes that filled the room with warmth and drew smiles and seconds from everyone involved.
A Snapshot of Week 3
The session was not just about following recipes; it was about creating moments of joy and sharing the fruits of our labour with friends and family. Thanks to the skillful eye of Josh Goorty from JBGN Photography, these moments were beautifully captured. His photographs not only capture our achievements in time but also celebrate the journey our participants are on. Josh’s contributions go beyond photography, adding a layer of engagement and enthusiasm to our program. You can admire more of his work on his website at JBGN Photography.More Classes Added!
The success of our cooking classes has been so profound that we are thrilled to announce the expansion of the program. Due to popular demand, a second cooking series is set to launch, promising more opportunities for culinary exploration and personal growth. This is a testament to the impact these classes have on our participants, encouraging not just culinary skills but also confidence, independence, and community integration. The Essence of Our Cooking Classes
At KDS, our cooking classes are more than just a place to learn how to cook; they are a nurturing ground for development across several dimensions:- Skill Development: Participants engage in hands-on learning from grocery shopping to meal preparation, enhancing their ability to plan, execute, and enjoy the results of their hard work.
- Cognitive Growth: The classes challenge participants to think critically and solve problems on the go, enhancing cognitive functions through practical application.
- Emotional Well-being: Cooking is a therapeutic activity that boosts self-esteem. Completing a recipe gives a sense of accomplishment that fosters a positive self-image and promotes emotional health.
- Social Skills: By working in a team setting, participants develop communication and interpersonal skills, forging friendships in a context that values collaboration and support.
- Health and Nutrition: Understanding ingredients and techniques promotes healthier eating habits, empowering participants to make informed dietary choices.
- Independence: The skills learnt in the kitchen translate to greater self-sufficiency outside of it, equipping our participants with the tools they need to live more independently.
