Launching Our New Kids’ Cooking Classes and Adult Cooking Program

Last week marked a delicious milestone for Kangaroo Disability Services with the launch of our new kids’ school holiday cooking class and the comprehensive 12-week cooking program for adults. The enthusiasm and joy these sessions brought to participants were truly heartwarming, highlighting not just the culinary delights they created but also the invaluable skills they gained under the expert guidance of Chef Michelle O’Hara.

Michelle, with her 25 years of culinary experience, has been an inspiring mentor. Her journey from managing multiple successful eateries in Adelaide to leading our classes reflects her passion and dedication to sharing her knowledge. The kids’ classes saw young chefs whipping up Vegetarian Spaghetti Bolognese and Pork and Beef Meatballs, with a sweet finish of Apple Crumble. Meanwhile, adults tackled Quick Ricotta Gnocchi and Lemonade Scones, mastering dishes that are as delightful to eat as they are fun to make.

Why Our Cooking Classes Are a Recipe for Success

Skill Development: Our cooking classes are about much more than following recipes. Participants learn essential life skills like meal planning, grocery shopping, and budgeting. These skills foster creativity and empower our chefs to be more self-reliant and confident in their daily lives.

Cognitive Growth: Cooking is a fantastic exercise in enhancing concentration, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. The detailed process of measuring, timing, and executing recipes helps sharpen the mind and fosters significant cognitive development.

Emotional Well-being: There’s a profound sense of achievement in creating a meal from scratch. This accomplishment boosts self-esteem and confidence, enhancing participants’ self-image and fostering a greater sense of autonomy.

Financial Management: Understanding how to prepare cost-effective meals is crucial. Our classes teach financial management through practical applications, helping participants make informed choices that align with their budgets.

Social Interaction: The kitchen is a perfect backdrop for building social skills. Our group-based classes promote communication and teamwork, essential for nurturing relationships and fostering a supportive community atmosphere.

Health Awareness: We place a strong emphasis on nutrition and healthy eating, teaching participants about balanced diets and portion control. This knowledge is crucial for taking charge of one’s health.

Therapeutic Benefits: Cooking is not just about eating; it’s a sensory experience that offers therapeutic benefits, helping to relax the mind and engage the senses.

Real-world Application: The skills acquired in our classes translate directly into everyday life, enabling participants to manage their dietary needs and preferences independently.

All-inclusive Approach and Personal Attention: We provide all ingredients and ensure personal attention by limiting class sizes, making learning comprehensive and focused.

A Look Ahead

The success of our initial classes has set a delightful precedent, and we are eager to continue this culinary journey. We plan to offer more kids’ cooking classes during the next school holidays and are considering expanding our adult program to additional days if there’s enough interest.
