As the 6th week of our cooking program unfolded at Kangaroo Disability Services, our participants donned their chef hats and delved into the world of pastries, transforming simple ingredients into exquisite sausage rolls, mini pasties, and chocolate chip cookies. Under the tutelage of Chef Michelle O’Hara, each participant mastered the techniques of pastry making, showcasing not only their culinary skills but also their passion for food craftsmanship.

The Art of Pastry Making

This week, our kitchen turned into a bustling bakery. Participants learned how to handle, roll, and shape dough—a sensory experience that enhances fine motor skills and encourages artistic expression. The main course featured sausage rolls and mini pasties, which allowed everyone to get hands-on experience seasoning and encasing their fillings. The dessert was an all-time favorite: choc chip cookies, which brought smiles and a sweet end to our day.

Cooking is not just about following recipes; it’s about creating, experimenting, and enjoying the process. This week’s focus on pastry provided our chefs with a new set of challenges and the satisfaction of seeing their efforts transform into tasty, tangible outcomes.

Educational Excursion Next Week

Looking ahead to Week 7, we are excited to take our culinary adventure outside the kitchen. Our participants will visit a local grocery store in South Australia, where they will apply their learning in a real-world setting. This outing will allow them to select their ingredients, engage with local vendors, and understand more about food sourcing and sustainability. It’s an opportunity to reinforce budgeting skills, nutritional choices, and community interaction—key components that support independent living.

Why Cooking Classes Matter

  • Boost Cognitive Skills: Following recipes, measuring ingredients, and timing dishes require concentration and problem-solving.
  • Promote Physical Health: Cooking is a form of physical therapy for some, improving dexterity and coordination.
